Factory Tour of Steinway & Sons in Hamburg

A glimpse behind the scenes at Steinway and Sons factory in Hamburg

Factory Tour of Steinway & Sons: Steinway & Sons, also known as Steinway, is an American piano company, founded in 1853 in Manhattan by German piano builder Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg. The company’s growth led to the opening of a factory in New York City, United States, and later a factory in Hamburg, Germany. The factory in the Queens borough of New York City supplies the Americas and the factory in Hamburg supplies the rest of the world.

Steinway has been described as a prominent piano company, known for making pianos of high quality and for inventions within the area of piano development. Steinway has been granted 139 patents in piano making; the first in 1857. The company’s share of the high-end grand piano market consistently exceeds 80 percent. The dominant position has been criticised, with some musicians and writers arguing that it has blocked innovation and led to a homogenisation of the sound favoured by pianists.

In addition to the flagship Steinway piano line, Steinway markets two other, lower priced brands of piano sold under the secondary brand names Boston and Essex. The Boston brand is for the mid-level market and the Essex brand is for the entry-level market. Boston and Essex pianos are designed by Steinway engineers and produced in Asia at other piano makers’ factories under the supervision of Steinway employees to utilise a lower cost of parts, production, and labor.

Learners at London School of Business and Research (LSBR) are regularly exposed to the new and innovative approaches to production and creative concepts.  Our students are encouraged to visit various factories and industrial facilities in and around their place of residence to immerse themselves into the actual working environment in these factory setting and to evaluate and suggest ways of improvements as part of their corporate outreach.  This broadens the outlook of our learners.  If for any reason, the learners cannot visit a facility due to some practical reasons, the professors at LSBR assist the learners by showcasing curated videos of the actual working environment at those facilities for the information of the learners.
